CostCo: It's all the Rage.

It has been a while.. I know (multiple face palm)... since I've blogged. In my defence I've had the stupid-est inflamed left tonsil which has been giving me grief for almost the last 2 weeks. BOO!

So I shall begin with the craziness that is CostCo. The first ever CostCo store to open up in Sydney (Parramatta Rd, Auburn) had gained so attention, I knew that there probably was no chance of actually getting into the store the day that it opened (Thursday, 21st July 2011). The hype leading up to the grand opening was quite contagious. I had signed up to be a member before it opened, as I figured it would be a long wait to sign up on the day. So I (foolishly) waited til that Saturday to visit. Parramatta Rd was BUMPER TO BUMPER, STOP START + whatever other phrases you can think of to represent traffic congestion. It literally took us 1 hour to get down Parramatta Road, when it really should've taken 5 mins (from Centenary Drive). I actually managed to drag my sister along with me. She knew that there would be traffic.. and she LOATHES traffic.. so I bribed her with McDonalds. It seemed to work.

My sister points out that there is overflow parking available, so we make our way (slower than snail pace) to turn into the overflow carpark. But my ever so smart sister sees a car wash on the way towards the turn! See this is a trick that we use for shopping centre carparks. If we just can't find a parking spot.. we just head to the carwash level and pay them to wash our car and hold our car... that save us looking for spots, and more time to shop, in my case eat. I will not get into that whole story.. but I will say this.. I DON'T like late night shopping with my sister.. she doesn't let me eat. She would rather walk around and spend money on dvds than buy food to satisfy empty, after work, tummies, something I will never understand.

So continuing... We drive into the carwash on Parramatta road, and greeted by an employee who smirks once we inform them that we would like to get our car washed. Smirk = I know the only reason why you want to get your car washed is becasue you want to go to CostCo and you can't get to the overflow carpark quick enough.

We hand over the keys and, with a spring in our steps, we walk towards the set of lights that seperate us from Bulk Buying Heaven. Nothing could have prepared me for the disappointment that was to come.

CostCo Employee: "Sorry guys, Police orders. We've closed Costco. We re-open tomorrow at 10am."

{INSERT some disbelief + furrowed eye brows + a jaw dropping glace at my sister + a "so we endured that ridiculous traffic for nothing" thought HERE}

So I went back a week later. Sunday. I actually managed to pick up my membership card and get in! And it was literally packed floor to ceiling, with stuff. I can't even begin to describe the overwhelming enormity that was. I saw KitchenAid food processers as well as contact lenses, towers of toilet paper, a 12.5kg bag of white flour, massive trays of baked goods, gigantic bottles of salad dressing, and then I saw the lines to the checkout. If anything was to put me off from buying at Costco, it would be those lines. I decided, I would just take a look around, check out the prices. Something that was pretty exciting was the 1.5 kg of pine nuts for $25! That is mega cheap!! For those who need a comparison, Coles would sell a 45gram bag for about $6. YOU SEE?! So I've still yet to actually buy stuff from there.. but I've already decided that my list of first purchases will consist of oversized jars of herbs and spices, nutella, cream cheese, and a kitchenaid food processor.

  2. Haha, perhaps we all need the craze to die down a little. I think I'd also have to find friends to split the massively sized products with as well =p

  9. Bummer about the first attempt, although you did get your car washed :) I wouldn't buy giant jars/containers/packages of anything unless I had a huge family, otherwise I'd end up tossing more of half of the contents.
